The West Jones Quiz Bowl Team has been busy!

The West Jones Quiz Bowl Team has been busy! Within two weeks, they competed in the Mississippi History Bowl in Richton, the Hurricane Bowl at USM's Marine Education Center in Ocean Springs, and, finally, the Math & Science Competition at Mississippi College in Clinton. At the Hurricane Bowl, the team advanced to the first playoff round but fell to Gulfport (who won the tournament), and they earned the Good Sportsmanship Award. At MC, the team won 3rd place in the team competition event. Top 25% individual winners at MC were Kevin Gabriel (Mathematics), Elias Martinez (Biology, Chemistry), and Armani Nguyen (Chemistry-top 15%).

Marine Science students travel to new Marine Education Center in Ocean Springs

Marine Science students from WJHS spent the day at USM’s new Marine Education Center in Ocean Springs where educators engaged the students in lessons about plankton, using a dichotomous key, and a shark dissection. Additionally, students learned about related degrees offered at USM as well as opportunities for high school students to learn about the ocean, its inhabitants, and environmental issues through summer camps and other programs.
