Mustangs beat Petal

Petal—The Mustangs made their first road trip of the season with a matchup at 6A Petal. The Panthers were fresh off an opening day victory.

The Mustang offense started up quickly. Bre Carr’s shot in the 3rd minute appeared to bounce into the goal but was disallowed. Just two minutes later, the Mustangs hit pay dirt. Forward Bailey James struck a shot on frame but was saved. Midfielder Kaylee Chennault was crashing the goal and tapped the rebound home for her second goal of the year.   In the 12th minute, Chennault would take the shot that was saved. This time, forward Katie Beth Sumrall would knock in the rebound giving West a 2-0 lead.   Carr scored the final Mustang goal in the 55th minute. Sumrall laid a ball back to midfielder Kara Christian. She sent a driven ball over the defense, and Carr would handle the rest. She blasted the ball past the Panther keeper for her first goal of the season.   The Mustangs completed 218 out of 283 (77%) of their passes on the night. Haley James, Taylor Barkley, and Anna Bookout had five interceptions each.    Keepers Madison Stinson (7) and Maddie McLean (1) combined to save all eight Panther shots on goal.   Next up for the Mustangs is two 6A teams, Gulfport and St. Martin, in the Laurel Tournament on Saturday.
