Mustangs beat Petal
Petal—The Mustangs made their first road trip of the season with a matchup at 6A Petal. The Panthers were fresh off an opening day victory.
The Mustang offense started up quickly. Bre Carr’s shot in the 3rd minute appeared to bounce into the goal but was disallowed. Just two minutes later, the Mustangs hit pay dirt. Forward Bailey James struck a shot on frame but was saved. Midfielder Kaylee Chennault was crashing the goal and tapped the rebound home for her second goal of the year. In the 12th minute, Chennault would take the shot that was saved. This time, forward Katie Beth Sumrall would knock in the rebound giving West a 2-0 lead. Carr scored the final Mustang goal in the 55th minute. Sumrall laid a ball back to midfielder Kara Christian. She sent a driven ball over the defense, and Carr would handle the rest. She blasted the ball past the Panther keeper for her first goal of the season. The Mustangs completed 218 out of 283 (77%) of their passes on the night. Haley James, Taylor Barkley, and Anna Bookout had five interceptions each. Keepers Madison Stinson (7) and Maddie McLean (1) combined to save all eight Panther shots on goal. Next up for the Mustangs is two 6A teams, Gulfport and St. Martin, in the Laurel Tournament on Saturday.

West Jones Girl's Soccer dominates in season opener against Ridgeland with 5-0 victory, Game 1...
![]() |
Game 1 Starters |
Laurel Sportsplex—From 2002 until 2015 only two teams would win a state championship in 5A girls’ soccer, the Ridgeland Titans or the West Jones Mustangs. In this classic matchup, the Mustangs showed up strong taking a 5-0 victory to open the season.
Freshman midfielder Haley James would score her first varsity goal in the 11th minute. Junior midfielder Kara Christian played a ball through the left side to James for the 1-0 lead.
In the 27th minute, 8th-grade midfielder Maylee McLeod a ball through the reds to a cutting Ella Jefcoat. The 8th grade forward touched the ball around the diving keeper for the second goal.
In the 39th minute, senior Anna Bookout would play a ball on the ground from the left to the back runner Katie Beth Sumrall. She finished extending the lead.
Three minutes later, senior forward Bre Carr fired a shot on goal that was saved. Junior midfielder Kaylee Chennault crashed the goal and hammered the rebound home for the fourth goal.
The final score came from Carr again. She laid off a pass to freshman midfielder Jenny Batista. She had stepped into the defender's blind-spot and scored back post.
Sophomore keeper Madison Stinson and freshman keeper Maddie McLean combined for the shutout.

Mustangs Girl's Soccer outpaces the Rangers, 4-1 Game 2
Richland Game 2 Starters |
Laurel Sportsplex—The Mustangs raced out to a 2-0 lead early before finishing off the Rangers 4-1 in the finale of the Sumrall Classic.
In the 10th minute, forward Bailey James received a pass out wide and connected with midfielder Kaylee Chennault. She played a through ball to a cutting Breonna Williams. Her shot beat the keeper for her first goal of the match. Two minutes later, senior fullback Anna Bookout crossed a ball into the box and forward Ella Jefcoat volleyed it over the keeper for the score. After a Mustangs foul, Richland would score their only goal of the day on a driven free kick. Arguably the play of the day occurred in the 40th minute. Center back Azlyn Dawson won a tackle in the defensive third. She drove upfield and played a spot-on pass that split the two center backs and ran onto the path of Williams. She touched the ball around the sliding keeper and finished into the empty net. In the 49th minute, forward Emily Sturdivant challenged the keeper. Her shot was deflected back to her feet. She then played a ball to Jefcoat who finished her second goal of the game. The defense allowed only two shots on frame during the run of play. Keeper Madison Stinson saved both for her second win of the day.
