Laurel Sportsplex—From 2002 until 2015 only two teams would win a state championship in 5A girls’ soccer, the Ridgeland Titans or the West Jones Mustangs. In this classic matchup, the Mustangs showed up strong taking a 5-0 victory to open the season.
Freshman midfielder Haley James would score her first varsity goal in the 11th minute. Junior midfielder Kara Christian played a ball through the left side to James for the 1-0 lead.
In the 27th minute, 8th-grade midfielder Maylee McLeod a ball through the reds to a cutting Ella Jefcoat. The 8th grade forward touched the ball around the diving keeper for the second goal.
In the 39th minute, senior Anna Bookout would play a ball on the ground from the left to the back runner Katie Beth Sumrall. She finished extending the lead.
Three minutes later, senior forward Bre Carr fired a shot on goal that was saved. Junior midfielder Kaylee Chennault crashed the goal and hammered the rebound home for the fourth goal.
The final score came from Carr again. She laid off a pass to freshman midfielder Jenny Batista. She had stepped into the defender's blind-spot and scored back post.
Sophomore keeper Madison Stinson and freshman keeper Maddie McLean combined for the shutout.
