Laurel Sportsplex—The Mustangs raced out to a 2-0 lead early before finishing off the Rangers 4-1 in the finale of the Sumrall Classic.
In the 10th minute, forward Bailey James received a pass out wide and connected with midfielder Kaylee Chennault. She played a through ball to a cutting Breonna Williams. Her shot beat the keeper for her first goal of the match. Two minutes later, senior fullback Anna Bookout crossed a ball into the box and forward Ella Jefcoat volleyed it over the keeper for the score. After a Mustangs foul, Richland would score their only goal of the day on a driven free kick. Arguably the play of the day occurred in the 40th minute. Center back Azlyn Dawson won a tackle in the defensive third. She drove upfield and played a spot-on pass that split the two center backs and ran onto the path of Williams. She touched the ball around the sliding keeper and finished into the empty net. In the 49th minute, forward Emily Sturdivant challenged the keeper. Her shot was deflected back to her feet. She then played a ball to Jefcoat who finished her second goal of the game. The defense allowed only two shots on frame during the run of play. Keeper Madison Stinson saved both for her second win of the day.
